On January 7, a deal was struck between Apple and Samsung TV, which will begin offering iTunes movies and TV shows on Samsung TV.

This is the first time that Apple has opened its software services to competitors'products. It also means that Apple is speeding up the expansion of its software services market beyond its hardware devices and transforming itself into a technology and media service company. In a letter to investors on the first trading day of the New Year, Apple CEO Cook said that due to unexpected slowdown in markets such as China, he lowered his forecast for the company's current quarterly revenue.

However, Apple has not disclosed more details about the partnership, and the scope of the partnership is unknown. In an interview with 21st Century Economics Reporter, Samsung Electronics China said that no more information could be shared at present.

Smartphones encounter the ceiling is an unavoidable reality, in the case of peak penetration. Sales revenue generated by the switching cycle has been difficult to increase on a large scale. Therefore, in the growing stock of users, generating more revenue from services, while carrying out hardware innovation in the iOS ecosystem, are Apple's two strategies at the moment. Only in this way can Apple maintain a continuous imagination space.

In an interview with 21st Century Economics Reporter, Jia Mo, an analyst at Canalys, said that from Samsung's point of view, users can benefit from Apple's powerful iTunes ecological resources. More significant for Apple, it can rely on the huge sales of Samsung Electric Appliances to bring its services to more users, possibly even Android users.

Boost performance

The competition between Samsung and Apple in the smartphone and computer fields can be described as a struggle. In terms of software services, the two rivals chose to shake hands and make peace.

Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services at Apple, said: "We look forward to bringing iTunes and Airplay 2 to more customers around the world through Samsung smart TV. Users of the iPhone, iPad and Mac will have another way to enjoy their favorite content on the largest screen at home."

According to the agreement, Samsung will support the AirPlay2 streaming protocol and the purchase and broadcast of iTunes streaming media on the upcoming smart TV. 21st Century Economics Reporter also saw on Apple AirPlay's official page that "leading TV manufacturers will also integrate AirPlay 2 directly into system functions. Users can easily share or mirror things on iOS devices or Mac devices directly onto smart TV that supports AirPlay 2".

The TV manufacturer referred to in this slogan includes Samsung TV. According to data released by IHS, the market share of Samsung and LG in the world in the third quarter of 2018 was 28.4% and 15.4%, respectively, which increased significantly compared with the first half of the year. It is noteworthy that Sony, previously ranked fifth, jumped to the third place in this quarter, with a market share of 9.5%. Until now, streaming media purchases in AirPlay2 and iTunes stores have been one of the main features of Apple TV. If users buy streaming media programs or movies on iTunes, they can only play through Apple TV.

After the cooperation, using iTunes on Samsung TV means that Samsung TV users no longer need to buy an Apple TV set-top box to access Apple content. This is the first time that Apple has allowed users to enjoy Apple's services on non-Apple devices after Apple Music. Apparently, Apple can't wait for the day when Apple TV is widely accepted in the market. Instead, they choose to work with existing TV brands, and AirPlay2 will be launched in more than 190 countries and regions.

When hardware sales suffer bottlenecks, Apple will place its hopes on software services and see their potential for performance growth. Apple's Q4 results for fiscal year 2018 show that iTunes and services revenue reached 9.98 billion US dollars, up 17.4% from the same period last year, reaching an all-time high.

"If a user suddenly touches iTunes on a Samsung TV, he or she will become a user of Apple's services. This will mean more to Apple itself. Samsung can also load other services, such as Netflix and other local services in the United States. With Apple's iTunes loaded, Apple has direct access to users it had previously been difficult to reach, and its overall service revenue on Netflix will improve. Jia Moruo further explained that.

Similar to Apple's trajectory, Samsung Electronics has also encountered Waterloo in the Chinese market. According to IDC data, Samsung's annual shipments accounted for 18.7% of China's market share in 2013. Since then, it has started to decline, falling to 0.9% in the first three quarters of 2018.

On January 8, Samsung Electronics will announce its preliminary results for the fourth quarter. According to the agency's forecast, operating profit fell 12% to 13.3 trillion won ($118.5 billion) from a year earlier. If the forecast is accurate, it will be Samsung Electronics's first quarterly decline in operating profit in two years. Such bleak performance also worries the capital market.

Song Mingxie, senior analyst at HI Investment & Securities, a market research firm, believes that the decline in Chinese market demand will further affect Samsung chip sales. Sales of smartphones in China will not only affect Apple, but also Samsung. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics's memory and processor chips are used in many smartphones, including China's largest smartphone.
